AiBST TRUST Launches DMPK and Bioanalytical Chemistry Laboratory
The African Institute of Biomedical Science and Technology Trust (AiBST TRUST) has commissioned its Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) and Bioanalytical Chemistry Laboratory, strengthening the institution’s capacity to support drug-development research, scientific training, and pharmaceutical innovation in Zimbabwe and across Africa.
The commissioning brought together representatives from the Gates Foundation, the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), the University of Dundee’s Drug Discovery Unit, the Ministry of Health and Child Care, TENDO, the media, and members of the AiBST Board and Management. Their presence reflected a shared commitment to strengthening biomedical research infrastructure and advancing locally driven solutions to Africa’s health challenges.
The DMPK and Bioanalytical Chemistry Laboratory is a specialised facility designed to enhance AiBST TRUST’s capabilities in drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and bioanalysis. These disciplines are essential to understanding how medicines are absorbed, distributed, metabolised, and eliminated by the body—critical information for the safe and effective development and use of medicines.
A key feature of the laboratory is an advanced liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) system. This technology enables the accurate measurement of drugs and their metabolites in biological samples, supporting pharmacokinetic studies, bioequivalence testing, therapeutic drug monitoring, toxicology assessments, and broader drug-development research.
With support from the Gates Foundation, the laboratory will create expanded opportunities for researchers, laboratory personnel, students, and collaborating institutions. It will strengthen access to high-quality research infrastructure, enhance practical scientific training, and support studies that respond to local and regional health priorities.
At the heart of this vision is the leadership of Professor Collen Masimirembwa, whose work in precision medicine, drug discovery, and biomedical research has contributed to the growth of a stronger African research and development ecosystem. The support of the Gates Foundation recognises both this leadership and AiBST TRUST’s potential to expand its contribution to biomedical research, innovation, and drug discovery across the continent.
The commissioning represents more than the opening of a laboratory; it is an investment in African scientific talent, institutional capacity, and sustainable innovation. By expanding access to advanced laboratory technologies, AiBST TRUST is creating an environment in which African scientists can generate evidence, develop expertise, and contribute to health solutions that improve lives.
