Preamble

The science and technologies of drug discovery and development have experienced quantum leaps of progress from crude plant extracts, unknown targets and unstructured clinical trials to the modern age of combinatorial chemistry, molecular targets and highly structured and controlled clinical trials. In addition to saving human lives, the industry of drug discovery and development has also proved to be highly profitable with some companies raking in billions of dollars from one drug. In order to be competitive in bringing to the market drugs that save or improve human lives, pharmaceutical companies are investing in technology platforms and skilled human resources. Pharmaceutical sciences and technologies have evolved into a specialised interdisciplinary endeavour that is being introduced at universities to meet an urgent need by industry for such graduates and to facilitate the production of drugs. Therefore, this M.Sc. degree in Pharmaceutical Medicine is aimed at training a new crop of functional graduates to develop and strengthen the human resource base in Zimbabwe and beyond. These graduates are expected to contribute towards the discovery, design, development, manufacturing, regulation and rational use of medicines in combating the high morbidity and mortality on the continent.

Rational of the Course

The R&D based pharmaceutical industry is not well developed in the sub Saharan African region. This has led to dependence on imported medicines. The capacity for drug discovery and development is currently established in developed countries of North America, Europe, the United Kingdom and Japan and is emerging in India, Brazil and China. This discrepancy is due to poor or lack of technology platforms for drug discovery & development and skilled human resources. Therefore, this Master of Science Degree in Pharmaceutical Medicine will address the skills gap in the pharmaceutical industry. This will also represent a response to the SADC call for efforts to enhance Africa’s capacity for drug manufacturing to meet its population’s health needs.
